RECREATION
In
the mid-1990's, a national magazine rated Ukiah one of the 10 best
and most livable cities in the country. The city of almost 16,000
serves as the county seat of government as well as the headquarters
for much of Mendocino's industry and agriculture. An attractive
downtown, convention center, retail malls and surrounding wine
country make Ukiah a popular destination. A variety of lodgings and
restaurants add to the mix. A county airport provides facilities for
private aircraft and commuter service to SFO. Recreational
attractions include Lake Mendocino (five miles northeast of town)
and a number of city and county parks.
Wineries
Winegrapes
were first planted in Mendocino County in the years following the
California Gold Rush, in the 1850s. Immigrant farmers, failing as
prospectors, turned to agriculture as a way of life in their new
home. Saving the flatter lands on the river plains for farming food
crops, these pioneer winegrowers planted their vineyards on the more
rugged hillsides and sun-exposed ridgetops.
Today,
Mendocino vineyards and wineries prosper, as the name
"Mendocino," and the special qualities of its wines,
become increasingly well-known. Attention in the region has now
turned to focus upon the particular grape varieties and wine styles
that, in each particular Mendocino microclimate, can produce the
best and most distinctive wines.
With
new vineyard locations, different varietals, specialized
viticultural techniques, a strong regional emphasis on organic grape
growing, and skilled winemaking, Mendocino grapes and wine are
positioned for even greater success in coming years.
Mendocino
County is home to some of the finest vintners in the world. Most
wineries are located either on the Highway 101 corridor or Highway
128. Enjoy wine tasting and a little touring while you experience
the beauty of our hills and valleys.

Golf
Ukiah
Golf Course is nestled among the oaks in the western
part of the Ukiah Valley. The terrain of the golf course
is one of rolling hills and narrow fairways which are protected by
many trees. The greens are small, which makes approach shots
difficult and the elevated greens make chipping even more so.
Golfers
of all skill levels will enjoy
playing Ukiah. Low handicappers will find all the
challenge they could hope for. New players will
find an atmosphere that is not
intimidating.
With
weekend tee times always available and only about an hour north of
the congested courses in Sonoma County, Ukiah is quickly becoming a
favorite destination for golfers from all over. Come play Ukiah and
see for yourself one of Mendocino County's hidden
treasures.
Lake
Mendocino
Lake
Mendocino is located in the northern coast range of California
where redwood forests meet the wine country. Created by the
construction of Coyote Dam on the East Fork of the Russian River in
1958, the lake has a surface area of 1,822 acres. The dam, built and
maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is 160 feet high and
3,500 feet long. The structure provides flood damage reduction,
water conservation, and hydroelectric power. The lake provides many
recreation opportunities.
